30 Days on the Road in Italy…Day 3: Lake Maggiore

Come with us as we explore Italy and check out properties for Gira! Italian Vacation Rentals.

Each of Italy’s lakes has its own personality.  Previously, we visited Lake Orta, with its gentle demeanor and atmosphere of artistic contemplation.

Lake Maggiore viewNow we are moving on to Lake Maggiore, so called because it is Italy’s largest lake.  As we arrive here, at our friend’s home, we take in the breathtaking vistas and look down on a delightful collection of villages and towns along the shore.  As we move from one vacation property to another and meet the owners, we feel a nice sense of community. Owing to its proximity to Milan, many of the affluent Milanese have second homes here and come to relax.

Artists and writers have come here and found inspiration.  Ernest Hemingway visited in 1948 and set part of A Farewell to Arms in the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees.   In the 1930s Arturo Toscanini rented a summer villa on the tiny island of Isolino San Giovanni and it became a meeting place for anti-Fascist intellectuals.  Our apartments called Il Maestro are situated directly in front of the island.

Isola dei Pescatori on Lake MaggioreIf you come to Lake Maggiore, a trip to the Borromean Islands is essential.  Each has a different history and character, and you can spend a leisurely day going from one to another with the boats that run frequently from Stresa and between the islands.  On a recent trip, we went out to Isola dei Pescatori and enjoyed a quiet afternoon stroll.

Paradiso sul Lago on Lake Maggiore
Today we visit an elegant and modern luxury villa, located directly on the lake, called Paradiso sul Lago.  The owner greets us and proudly takes us through the house, which has recently been renovated to a high standard.  This is the kind of place that you can spread out and enjoy the expansive grounds that include not only a swimming pool, but also a soccer field, basketball court and small golf driving range–there is that much territory!  On the sprawling lawn that takes you to the lake, you will walk past the owner’s helicopter, which can be rented for trips to Venice, Lake Como, Liguria…pretty much anywhere you would like to go.

Paradiso sul Lago on Lake MaggioreThe interior is every bit as impressive as the outside, with beautiful and comfortable furnishings and every modern convenience, including air conditioning, satellite TV in each bedroom and wireless Internet access throughout the house.  The kitchen is totally up to date and well equipped for the most sophisticated tastes.  There is a gym with stationary bike and various types of weights.  Much of the heating and cooling are provided by a geothermal system.

For the most discriminating client, Paradiso sul Lago is an excellent choice, especially for a family wanting to have a lot of space for the children to enjoy sports.

Villa Visconti on Lake MaggioreThe village of Massino Visconti is perched in a lovely scenic location above the lake.  It’s the setting of Villa Visconti, which has undergone some significant renovation since last year. The villa has three apartments, each of which has been reconfigured and improved. Now there are new kitchens, living areas and bedrooms that add an entirely new dimension to this rental experience.

Casale Belgiardino on Lake MaggioreLast year, the owners of Casale Belgiardino added a swimming pool to the property, and now the interiors are getting a nice makeover to add new furnishings, fixtures and connectivity.  With these changes, this villa becomes one of the best on the lake. But there’s more.  Casale Belgiardino enjoys one of the broadest and most unobstructed views of Lake Maggiore that you will find.

After our day of touring, we return to our friend’s home where we enjoy a delicious home cooked meal, delightful conversation and a bit of Italian TV.

Next up:  Lake Como
